Starting with AARC

Mission

The mission of the Ann Arbor Rowing Club is to provide and promote a safe, affordable, and educationally rewarding rowing experience for residents of Ann Arbor and the surrounding area.

How you get started rowing with AARC depends upon several things:
  • The time of year
  • The type of rowing
  • Your previous rowing experience
  • Your age

What time of year is it?
From April 1 through October, AARC's full roster of on-water programs are available

Between December and March, AARC offers a Winter Training program, of on-land, group erging practices (using rowing machines).
What type of rowing? The sport of "rowing" encompasses two basic forms--sweep rowing and sculling

Sweep rowing is when each rower has one oar.  Boats are comprised of 2, 4, or 8 people and often have a coxswain.

Sculling is when each rower has two oars.  Sculling is typically done in a single but can also be accomplished in boats of 2 or 4 rowers.  Sculling does not have coxswains.
What is your rowing experience?

If you're new to the sport, then you will begin by enrolling in the appropriate learning class. See the section below, "Membership & Programs."

If you have rowed or sculled previously, you may be able to join one of our programs directly. AARC asks that you come row with us for a guest row/evaluation prior to signing up to ensure appropriate placement. See the section below, "Guest Rowers."
 Your age

AARC has primarily an adult membership, due to the fact that local high schools also have rowing teams, however, all AARC's programs are available to rowers who are starting high school or are older.
Our Inclusive Program has additional options for rowers 12 and older, who qualify.
